At least 13 individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
