EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
