Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing these medications need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
